It’s nice to find an attraction that doesn’t attract the maddening crowds when you visit a place.

Fortunately, one travel website has listed a bunch of such sites for each state, 16 of which are in Pennsylvania.

Travel website Hawaiian Islands took a look at more than 17,000 TripAdvisor reviews for specific destinations in the US. USA as a basis for this study. The website then used keywords like “disappointing” and “hidden gem” to calculate a percentage that categorizes each as “overrated” or “underrated” to arrive at its final conclusions.

Thus, these final findings deemed the following to be among Pennsylvania’s “Hidden Gems”:

  • Magic Gardens of Philadelphia (Philadelphia)
  • Efreth’s Alley Museum (Philadelphia)
  • National Civil War Museum (Harrisburg)
  • Presque Isle State Park (Erie)
  • National Aviary (Pittsburgh)
  • North American Wildlife Park ZooAmerica (Hershey)
  • Barnes Foundation (Philadelphia)
  • Jennie Wade House (Gettysburg)
  • Hershey Museum of History (Hershey)
  • National Museum of Liberty (Philadelphia)
  • City Hall Visitor Center (Philadelphia)
  • Eisenhower National Historic Site (Gettysburg)
  • Strasburg Scooter Tours (Lancaster County)
  • Hersheypark (Hershey)
  • Casino Parx (Bensalem)
  • PPG Paints Arena (Pittsburgh)

The National Freedom Museum was also considered the most underrated site in the state.

On the other side of the list, visitors seem to think that attractions like Sesame Place Philadelphia and Idlewild & SoakZone are some of the most overrated places in the Keystone State.

“Our research found that when it comes to overrated tourist attractions, amusement parks and scenic railroads scored highly, appearing in seven states each,” the study reads.

“Naturally, travel is a subjective art,” the study concludes. “While most may be disappointed by an attraction or think it’s overrated, others will still love it, putting it at the top of their itinerary.”
