Before Scorpio, Mahindra was known for making utility vehicles like Bolero, Armada, Classic etc. The brand was often associated with vehicles that could actually be abused in the countryside or off-roading. Tata Safari was the latest SUV available in the market. At Rs 8.25 lakh, even the Safari was an expensive SUV. A lot of things changed when the Scorpio came into the market. The price of the all-new Mahindra Scorpio started at Rs 5.5 lakh and when you compare it with the Safari or even the Toyota Qualis that was available in the market at that time.

The Mahindra Scorpio was available with three diesel and one petrol engine options. The diesel engines were 2179cc, 2609cc and 2523cc while the petrol engine is 2179cc. The diesel engine produces 109 Bhp and 250 Nm of peak torque. The petrol engine generates power of 116bhp and 184bhp. Both petrol and diesel engine options were available with a manual gearbox option. It was available in both 2WD and 4WD versions. The petrol engine did not do very well in terms of sales as it was not as fuel efficient as compared to the diesel.

The Scorpio was Mahindra’s first domestically produced vehicle. Consultants from AVL Austria and Japan were taken for this project. A total of 23 expert engineers worked on developing the Scorpio. The entire project, including design and development at the Nashik factory, cost around Rs 500 crore. A major problem with the first generation Mahindra Scorpio was the brakes. At 2.5 tonnes, the Scorpio was a heavy SUV and came with disc brakes at the front and drums at the rear. Initially, the SUV used leaf spring suspension at the rear but, later this was changed to multi-link coil overs which significantly improved the ride quality.

Mahindra Scorpio was not a great SUV. It had its flaws. The SUV was noisy, the engine wasn’t great and the mechanicals were but, it was strong because it was a steeper frame SUV and had a leaf spring suspension setup. The rugged Mahindra DNA was seen on the SUV and we think that’s one of the reasons why people loved it. Mahindra has also offered a variety of accessories for the Scorpio. Mahindra also had Mahindra customizations that customized the interior and exterior of the SUV as per customer interest.
