Business tycoon and Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra has shared a vintage photo of the first Scorpio launch in 2002 after seeing the highest bookings for the Mahindra Classic.
Mahindra said the old one is clearly gold.
“But what was unexpectedly surprising was that the highest booking for all cars during the month was for the Scorpio Classic,” he said.
In a tweet, Anand Mahindra wrote, “It’s been a good September. But what was unexpectedly surprising was the highest increase in bookings in the month for all cars – Scorpio Classic! 2002 It brings back nostalgic memories of the first Scorpio launch. Old is obviously gold.”
His tweet came as Mahindra’s utility vehicle segment recorded its highest ever monthly sales of 34,262 SUVs, up 166 percent from last year. Overall, the vehicle business recorded the highest monthly sales of 64,486 vehicles with a growth of 129 percent and the highest ever quarterly sales of 1,79,673 vehicles with a growth of 77 percent over last year. went
Anand Mahindra’s love for the Scorpio Classic has been very evident. Earlier, around the time of its launch, he had said, “Don’t blame me for being partial to the #ScorpioClassic, how can I forget that historic day 2 decades ago when we took a huge risk took the plunge and launched a car that we loved. Never built before. And you all blessed us and loved it. I still love it.”
The new Scorpio Classic comes with an ex-showroom price. ₹11.99 lakh, the updated SUV comes with a restyled front bumper, new LED DRLs and Mahindra’s ‘twin-peaks’ logo. It comes in two variants – the entry-level Classic S and the fully loaded Classic S11.
Talking about the September figures, Mahindra & Mahindra President (Automotive Division) Vijay Nakra, in a chat with news agency PTI That said, September turned out to be a record month for the company in terms of overall volume as well as SUV deliveries. He noted that the overall popularity of SUVs, along with strong demand for the company’s latest products, led to record shipments for the automaker last month.
He said that the company’s products like Scorpio-N, XUV700, Thar, Bolero Neo and even Scorpio Classic have seen great response in the market.
“Even in the thick of COVID-19, while the passenger vehicle industry was down, SUVs reported single-digit growth. Last year too, the segment grew well and this year it has grown at approx. 40 percent growth. SUVs continue to be the strongest growing segment in the overall passenger vehicle industry,” Nakra said.
Asked about chip supply, he noted that from an industry perspective, all OEMs are managing their supply chains, particularly semiconductors, relatively better than last year.
When asked if better supplies would help the company reduce the waiting period on models like the Scorpio and XUV700, he said: “This is our top priority and the biggest challenge we are all working on. But the reality is that we keep getting more bookings every month than we can deliver.”
“Brands like Scorpio-N, Scorpio Classic, for some of these brands we keep getting more bookings than our supply.”
On the business outlook, Nakra said overall demand is expected to remain strong, despite some headwinds like rising interest rates and low rainfall in some states.
