Mikel Arteta has admitted for the first time that Arsenal are in the title race with Manchester City – at least for now.

  • Gabriel won at Stamford Bridge
  • Arsenal have 34 points out of a possible 39
  • Arteta’s side are two points ahead of City

WHAT HAPPENED? The Gunners boss has always maintained that he and his players are taking things ‘game by game’ after their outstanding start to the Premier League season. But after seeing his side beat Chelsea 1-0 at Stamford Bridge on Sunday to move back to the top of the table above City, Arteta said his side were challenging his former team.

WHAT THEY SAID: Asked by reporters after the win in west London if his team were now in contention for the title, the Spaniard said: “We are today. But in football, today and tomorrow are very different. So let’s enjoy the time. Just look at what Manchester City have done in the last six years. With the best manager in the world, the best team in the world. They consistently showed this in every competition. We have to respect that very, very much. We are getting much better as a team and competing much better. At the moment we are achieving really good results, but it is a long time.”

BIGGER PICTURE: Arteta was impressed with how his side responded to losing top spot to Manchester City after the reigning champions’ win against Fulham on Saturday.

“We were under pressure today because we lost first place,” he said. “We prepared the game to come here and win, but knowing that to win here is a different story. Guys, they did it. I’m really happy that they took that step. What we did today was absolutely phenomenal.”
