There’s an easy way to be a hero when it comes to holiday crowds at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA): Avoid the congestion and lines. No need for a cape, just a little pre-planning and you’ll be a “hero” to your fellow travelers or family while making it easy on yourself. How, you say?

  • Avoid the hassle of driving with Sound Transit’s Link Light Rail, the best way to get out of a traffic jam.
  • Airport parking will be a challenge. Consider alternative modes of transportation to/from the airport, such as a taxi or rideshare option.
  • Change it to Speed ​​it Up! – Early morning and late afternoon drivers, this is for you. Use the arrivals/lower level to drop off in the morning and the departures/upper level to pick up in the evening!
  • Use SEA Spot Saver to reserve your spot in the TSA line, with extended hours until 10 p.m

  • The Central Terminal reopens! It’s been a long build during the pandemic, but soon you’ll be able to climb back up to our iconic wall of windows in Central Terminal as the renovation project takes its next big step. More space, more technology, more seats, it’s all coming. In addition, new shopping and commercial premises are also coming soon.
  • SEA Spot Saver is a success and we have extended the hours until 22:00. Previously, the advanced billing option for security screening lines was only available during peak hours of the day, until 1:00 p.m. Now in the afternoon and evening Free service options can make your journey more predictable and efficient until 10:00 p.m. Take advantage of it!
  • SEA Airport encourages travelers to think ahead, arrive early, be prepared for congestion and find ways to make your trip easier with advanced planning.
  • Airport parking will be a challenge — The good news is that the new automated parking guidance system continues to enhance your garage experience with easy-to-use lighting marking for available/occupied spaces with green/red lights. Currently, five of the eight floors are complete and the rest will be finished in early 2023 and are expected to reduce the time needed to find a position by 50 percent. Parking availability remains low throughout the airport area. Plan up to 45 minutes to find a spot on busy days. Reserved parking is limited and is already sold out for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. We recommend booking parking as early as possible during peak periods. Your best bet is to find alternative ways to get to the airport, such as public transportation, light rail, or carpooling.

By the Numbers

Holiday passenger numbers are expected to be even closer to pre-pandemic levels – forecast to be around 95% of 2019. That would be 13% up on last year.

The busiest days are expected to be Wednesday 23 November, with a forecast of 155,000 passengers traveling through the airport (departure, arrival and connection). The next busiest will be Friday, November 18, with a projected 146,000 total passengers through the airport, followed by Saturday, November 26 with a forecast of 142,000 travelers through the airport. Pre-pandemic passenger numbers reached 185,000 per day over Labor Day weekend in 2019. In general, the busiest days to travel are Thursdays and Fridays, as well as Sundays and Mondays, with busiest TSA security check in SEA between 5:00 and 10:00. 00:00, 14:00 – 17:00 and 21:00 – 23:00

SEA’s latest forecast for passenger numbers for 2022 will be around 11% below 2019 levels, while 2023 will be down 6% and return to pre-pandemic levels in 2024. Find out more on our Statistics page.

What is the best advice for travelers?

Get here early! Depending on your needs, you may need more time. Make sure you are at the airport at least two hours before boarding time for a domestic flight and three hours before an international flight

Masks are not required at the airport, but the CDC recommends wearing them during travel. Check your destination’s COVID-19 requirements for entry. If required, XpresCheck has evidence available at the baggage claim level.

Safety first; Avoid shoulder parking — Vehicles are advised to use the new batch of reconfigured mobile phones and avoid dangerous parking along the airport margins. Violators will be cited as the Port of Seattle Police are working with the Washington State Patrol for emphasis patrols during the holiday season.

Alternative ways to get to SEA Airport

  • Take a ride with taxis or app-based carpools like Uber and Lyft, or other modes of ground transportation
  • Rent your own ride. All car rental companies operate an off-site car rental facility where dedicated buses transport passengers free of charge 24 hours a day, 365 days a year
  • Pedal power! Yes, you can even bike to the airport with bike racks and two ways to get to the airport by bike
  • If you still plan to park, wait 45-60 minutes to find a spot. Off-site parking facilities are also expected to be very busy or already full

  1. CDC guidance for travelers changes depending on your COVID-19 vaccination status. Check with your airline for the state or country you plan to travel to.
  2. Be prepared for security checkpoints. SEA and TSA want to help you get through security checkpoints as quickly as possible. Travelers must remove electronic items larger than a mobile phone from their hand luggage.
