Coach Juan Carlos Ferrero admitted that it was “not easy” for him to work with Alexander Zverev, adding that he “needed someone” like Carlos Alcaraz after his split with the German. At the beginning of 2018, Zverev and Ferrero broke off their partnership and did not have a happy parting.
At the time, it was reported that Ferrero had problems with Zverev’s professionalism, and the German wanted more freedom when he was not playing in tournaments. At the end of 2018, Ferrero began working with the teenage Alcaraz.
Four years later, Alcaraz is a Grand Slam winner and the youngest No. 1 in tennis history. Ferrer is all about hard work and professionalism, and Alcaraz has fully embraced his coach’s philosophy.

“He is like another son to me, an older one.
He is my second player as a coach and I think I learn from him and he from me. We are both together and growing up at the same time. He is a very nice guy and very easy to work with.
I know I needed something like this because I worked with Sascha [Zverev] it wasn’t so easy for me, it’s not the same culture, he understands a little differently [the meaning of] Being a professional, I had to refresh myself a bit and work with someone who was somewhat of the same character as me and wanted the same things for the future and in Carlos I think I found that,” Ferrero told Eurosport.
After Alcaraz became a Grand Slam champion at the US Open, Ferrero claimed the 19-year-old had unleashed about 60% of his potential. If this is true, Alcaraz’s best is yet to come. However, it is abundantly clear that Alcaraz is already one of the best players in the world and a major contender wherever he goes. In January, Alcaraz will look to win his first title at the Australian Open.
