We’re back on the air, baby. The number of flyers at Des Moines International Airport is expected to surpass 2021 numbers, according to airport officials.

Game Status: Flights this fall were driven by an increase in “leisure travel,” said Kayla Kovarna, spokeswoman for the Des Moines airport.

  • More and more people are taking extra days for their business trips and inviting their families to join them, while taking advantage of remote work.
  • In September, the airport broke a record of 123,000 people boarding planes.
  • The average aircraft was 87.5% occupied in early October. The goal is to be above 80% to be considered a “profitable” flight, Kovarna said.

What follows: Kovarna expects that trend to continue as people try to combine business trips and vacations this month.

What we’re seeing: More than 20,000 travelers are expected to pass through the airport on Wednesday and Thursday during Thanksgiving week.

  • There are 27 non-stop destinations served in November, six more than three years ago.
  • A survey sent by the airport to major Des Moines business owners showed most of them planned to return to normal business travel by September 2022.

Airport Thanksgiving Tips:

  • Arrive 90 minutes before your departure time.
  • If you’re leaving your car, check out the airport’s new parking cost estimator and real-time parking availability tracker.
  • Construction is going on at the airport, causing congestion. If you’re parking in the cheap lots, go down to Leland Ave to avoid it and get to the green, blue and gray lots more easily.
