Eddie Howe welcomes Allan Saint-Maximin ahead of Newcastle United’s match against Chelsea | Tech US News

Eddie Howe reflected on Allan Saint-Maximin’s much-needed 90 minutes in Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup penalty shoot-out victory over Crystal Palace. The Frenchman is unscathed for his first start since August, which will be a relief for Howe given his recent hamstring problems.

Saint-Maximin has not played a full game since scoring a stunning late equalizer in the 1-1 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Indeed, the 25-year-old missed eight of nine games for United before back-to-back substitute appearances against Aston Villa and Southampton.

Although it was far from Saint-Maximin’s liveliest game against Palace, he will be hoping it will be enough to put him in contention for the start against Chelsea on Saturday night – the last game before the World Cup break in Qatar.

“Yeah, he needed it,” Howe admitted. “Maxi has had a long time, he is in a group of players who have not had much football, even really much time for training. I wanted to leave him on the field and get this time in his feet. This will be of great use to him.”

Newcastle have done well in Saint-Maximin’s absence, going nine games unbeaten – including four consecutive wins – to climb to third in the Premier League table.

However, Howe & Co are aware of what Saint-Maximin is capable of, with his performance during the 3-3 draw with champions Manchester City earlier in the season a prime example after giving Kyle Walker a nightmare afternoon.
