Erik ten Hag became Cristiano Ronaldo’s captain after Aston Villa’s defeat | Tech US News

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has admitted that Cristiano Ronaldo was his fourth choice for the captain’s armband for Sunday’s game against Aston Villa.

Ronaldo, who already had a disciplinary clash with Ten Hague this season, was surprisingly named United captain for the trip to Villa Park, which ended in a shock 3-1 defeat on Unai Emery’s Premier League return.

After the match, Ten Hag explained how Ronaldo ended up with the tape.

“Harry Maguire is on the bench, our club captain,” he began. “Then it’s about David de Gea, who is a leader, but he’s a goalkeeper and he’s far from the outfield.

“Then Casemiro is the leader, but he doesn’t speak perfect English, so Cristiano is the leader.”

Ronaldo played the full 90 minutes and finished the game alongside Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford in United’s attack but failed to spark a positive result as United slumped to their first defeat in ten games.

Ten Hag refused to blame Ronaldo for the result and instead attributed the defeat to United’s slow starts in both halves.

“We’re losing the game at the start of the first half and the second half, that’s unacceptable,” he said BBC Sport. “They looked fresher, more ready. The result is clear, it never lies. In football you always deserve it yourself. Today we were not good enough.

“After a long time it happened, I said it was up to us. We didn’t keep the ball, we didn’t get the right organization, we didn’t follow the rules and we lost the battle. Our players have experience.

“You have to read the game, organize yourself properly and not concede two goals. It was completely unnecessary. We have to be sharper. You have to be compact and stand on the ball. Everyone has to win their battles, we didn’t. No, it’s disappointing.”
