Ferry offering free travel for vets and active duty military | Tech US News

LEWES -On Nov. 11, the Cape May – Lewes ferry will offer free passenger round-trip, same-day travel for veterans and active military with valid ID.

Military discounts are available daily year-round on the Ferry and this is the fourth year the Delaware Bay service has offered the special free fare in honor of Veterans Day, according to a press release. Plus, military personnel and veterans receive a free cup of coffee or fountain soda plus 11% off any food or retail purchase at any terminal or aboard a ferry.

“The Cape May – Lewes Ferry is pleased to offer our thanks to our military community for their service to our country,” said Heath Gehrke, Director of Ferry Operations.

“If it wasn’t for our service members, we wouldn’t be enjoying the freedoms we have today.”

Mr. Gehrke noted that many of Ferry’s employees are veterans and reservists from all branches of the military, and the base port of the Cape May operation also houses the USCG’s training center.

“The ferry is one of the main ways that veterans and active duty military travel to Cape May for ceremonies and events,” Gehrke said. “Veterans Day is an important holiday for us and we hope we can make the journey a little easier for those who have served.”

According to the Veterans Administration, more than 300,000 veterans live in New Jersey, while nearly 70,000 reside in Delaware, approximately 8% of that state’s population. In Cape May County, veterans make up nearly 9% of the population, one of the highest rates in the state.

On November 11th, all active duty military and veterans will be able to take free round trip foot passengers on the Cape May – Lewes Ferry. If you are traveling round trip with a vehicle, standard fares with a $11 discount apply. These discounted rates are only valid on November 11th and cannot be combined with other discounts or promotions. These discounted Veterans Day rates only apply on Veterans Day, while the standard military discount applies year-round.

Reservations can be made by calling 800-643-3779.
