Has the best time to book vacation travel changed? | Tech US News

Conventional travel wisdom suggests that those flying around Thanksgiving and Christmas, holidays that many Americans travel each winter, should book their trip as early as possible. However, the pandemic has upended how, when and if many people fly and pushed out conventional wisdom about the emergency exit.

“Consumers are booking trips 25% less time before departure,” says Hayley Berg, economist at Hopper, a travel booking app. “About a week later for the national, about three weeks later for the international.”

Last-minute travel shoppers could benefit this year. Data provided by Google Flights by email suggests that the lowest prices for Christmas travel tend to be available 20 to 88 days before departure, based on five years of historical data. That’s much later than many travelers probably think.

However, this year, like many recently, could be different. Or it could go back to something like “normal”. And that’s good news for travelers who haven’t booked vacation trips until now.
