‘He feels fine but he’s aware of the injury’ – Graham Potter admits candidly as Chelsea wait to learn the seriousness of Ben Chilwell’s injury | Tech US News

Graham Potter has offered relatively promising information on the fitness of Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell after he was forced off through injury this week.

The Englishman injured his hamstring during the Blues’ Champions League win over Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday (November 2). Chilwell looked emotional as he left the pitch and his place at the upcoming FIFA World Cup is now in serious doubt.

The defender only recently recovered from a serious leg injury that kept him out for nearly a year and has been playing well for Chelsea this season. The left-back would be a reliable option for Gareth Southgate’s England squad but is now in a race against time to be fit.

Chelsea face Arsenal in the Premier League this weekend. Asked about Chilwell in his pre-match press conference, Potter said: (per Football.London):

“He’s going for scans later this afternoon so we’ll find out how he’s doing then and tomorrow will be the news. He’s feeling good but he’s aware of the injury. We’ve got to let the swelling go down so the scan is delayed. We’ll know after that.”

“He’s fine and we’re hopeful at the moment until we get a diagnosis. From there we’ll work to get him fit or strong again.”

Former Chelsea reserves manager Brendan Rodgers is questioning the timing of the World Cup following Chilwell’s injury.

Chilwell signed for Chelsea from Leicester in 2020 and joins a growing list of European stars injured ahead of the World Cup.

Rodgers believes the number of games before the Qatar tournament is the reason for so many injuries. He told reporters (according to The Leicester Mercury):

“When you go back to the announcement a few months ago, we all felt it was not an ideal time, first of all for the players and the fans. The cost of the trip only further emphasizes that the timing is not ideal.”

“For the players, this might be their only chance to play in the World Cup. They will give their all for their clubs, but there is no doubt in the back of their minds that one injury could sideline them.

Rodgers continued:

“I watched Ben play in the game last night and I hope it’s not too bad, but players shouldn’t be in that position. You could argue and say it will be the same at the end of the season, but you get that backup and that’s why we all thought the timing of this season wasn’t ideal. Now that we’re so close to him, we can see the problems he’s having.”
