“I want Argentina to win this World Cup because of Messi” – ex-Barcelona forward candidly admits 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar | Tech US News

Former Barcelona striker Javier Saviola recently admitted that he wants to see Argentina lift the 2022 FIFA World Cup because of Lionel Messi.

Saviola is currently the second coach of the Catalan club’s Juvenil A team. Speaking to the club’s media (via Mundo Deportiva), he said:

“I want Argentina to win this World Cup because of Messi.”

Saviola made 40 appearances for the Albiceleste in his career. But he admitted that playing at the World Cup was a completely different feeling.

“Playing in the World Cup has been a dream of mine since I was little and it’s like no other competition.”

He was teammates with Messi during the 2006 FIFA World Cup, when the Albiceleste lost in the quarter-finals on penalties to Germany.

Saviola noted that the current PSG star was not a key player for Argentina at the time. However, his talent was evident even then.

“Messi has been at the forefront of this team. He was very young and gradually he was brought into the lineup. When we were at the World Cup at 18 and doing the things he was doing, we realized he was a completely different player.”

He went on to talk about the passion of the Argentine fans, saying:

“In 2006, I realized the effort of people, in a country full of problems, to come to the field to support the chosen species. I realized the madness and the illusion carried by the Argentine team.”

He added about the defeat against Germany:

“The defeat against Germany is a thorn in my career. I enjoyed everything. I think the best anecdote besides football is the group. I will take it with me as one of the best memories.”

Former Barcelona star Lionel Messi is currently in Qatar for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. However, his future in club football is up in the air as his contract with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) expires next summer.

Having said that, Joan Laporta said the club will always be the Argentine’s home, as he told SPORT (via GOAL):

“Leo knows that he always has his home at Barca. But let me not talk about Leo because he is a player for another team and again we would enter into a series of statements and counter-statements that would not benefit us at all. He has a valid contract with a European club. I can only say that Leo was the best player in the history of Barca.”
