If you travel abroad frequently, global health cover may be better than travel insurance | Tech US News

If you frequently visit abroad for work or pleasure, whether you’re a student, professional or business owner, you may want to seriously consider purchasing comprehensive health coverage.

This insurance would come in handy if you fall ill in a foreign land. You may panic, thinking that you are in an alien land, and the medical facilities and treatment would be super expensive. While you should have a health insurance policy in India, it won’t provide much coverage abroad. Also, your travel insurance may not be enough in some cases as it has its own limitations.

This is exactly when a comprehensive health insurance policy would come to your rescue.

Says Bhaskar Nerurkar, Head of Health Administration Team, Bajaj Allianz General Insurance: “Global Healthcare has been designed keeping in mind the needs of people who are looking for seamless coverage, which would take care of treatment costs not only within India, but also across geographical boundaries for emergency and elective treatments”.

This product serves the following people:

1. A parent resident in India who regularly visits his child who is settled abroad.

2. A senior executive of a multinational company (MNC) residing in India and traveling abroad frequently on business.

3. Ultra High Net Worth Individuals (HNIs) residing in India who frequently travel abroad for leisure or business or both.

Adds Nerurkar, “Another unique attribute of the product is that due to its seamless nature, even if the actual treatment or surgery takes place outside India, post-operative rehabilitation can continue within India or vice versa if the insured so chooses.”

Global health cover vs travel insurance

A travel insurance plan is usually meant for those traveling outside India for a short duration. Contingencies that are generally covered in most travel insurance plans are flight cancellations, loss of personal effects and emergency medical treatment.

On the other hand, an international health insurance plan is designed to provide more comprehensive coverage for the treatment of hospitalized patients outside India and the ongoing treatment of chronic diseases.

Also, the purpose of travel insurance is to get the person back home. Travel insurance rarely covers long-term medical treatment. Also, once the person returns to their home country, travel insurance coverage ceases.

Elsewhere, coverage in a global health plan lasts 365 days and coverage continues even after the person returns to their home country.

Things to consider when opting for global health cover

Check if the global health policy offers worldwide coverage for planned and elective treatment. This coverage must be fluid, as well as facilitate continued treatment in the country of origin of the insured if he so decides.

It is also necessary to check that the comprehensive health policy covers not only hospitalization expenses, but also pre-hospitalization and post-hospitalization expenses.

Some global health plans in the market require the diagnosis to be done in India to get treatment abroad. It is recommended that you go to a plan without such condition and that the insured can take the treatment regardless of where the diagnosis is made.

Geographic coverage: Most of the global health plans in the market offer two types of geographic coverage, i.e. including the US or excluding the US. One can opt for the appropriate plan with the required geographical coverage. Plans that exclude the US have lower premiums than plans that include the US.

The most important thing is to check the credibility of the insurance company that would handle international claims and the ease of the process of registering a claim while one is hospitalized outside India.
