IIT Madras admits 87 students from government colleges for admission to BS programme

The acceptance letter for the BS degree program is handed over to the student during an event at IIT Madras today.

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras selected a total of 87 students from government and corporation schools in various districts in Tamil Nadu for enrollment in the BS program. Minister of School Education, Tamil Nadu, Thiru Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi handed over the admission letters students at an event held at IIT Madras under the ‘Anaivarukkum IITM’ initiative today, November 5. A total of 87 students, including 39 women, across more than 20 districts in Tamil Nadu have taken admission in the Bachelor of Data Science and Applications program. The next batch of IIT Madras BS program will start in January 2023 and applications are currently open at onlinedegree.iitm.ac.in.

“I congratulate the students from Tamil Nadu Government Colleges who have qualified for the IIT Madras Diploma Program and wish them success. I thank the management of IIT Madras and its Director Professor V Kamakoti for taking such important initiatives to make quality education accessible and affordable for Tamil Nadu state government students.This is in line with the state government’s initiative to make education in premier institutions accessible to government college students and I appreciate the cooperation of IIT Madras BS Degree Program in facilitating this endeavor.We look forward to taking this up to the next level when you introduce new programmes,” said Thiru Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, Minister of School Education, Government of Tamil Nadu.

The course is carefully designed to offer students multiple entry and exit options where a student can earn a certificate, diploma or degree. This gives students flexibility and allows them to choose what they want to achieve with this program. The program imparts highly sought-after industry-relevant skills that would greatly enhance employability. In addition, students graduating with a BS degree will be eligible to take the Graduate Aptitude Test (GATE) and study MTech in India or apply for postgraduate courses offered by universities abroad.

“An IIT BS degree is an unexpected opportunity. Earlier I didn’t know what IIT was but my ambitions changed when I came to know about this training. I worked hard for 12 weeks. I have learned new techniques to make learning easier,” said Jagashree, a student from Virugmabakkam who has been admitted to IIT Madras for the BS programme.

More than 15,000 students are enrolled in the program so far, with the largest number of students from Tamil Nadu, followed by Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.

“The aim of the ‘Anaivarukkum IITM’ initiative is to increase the number of government school students enrolled in our BS programme. We are thrilled that the first cohort of students has been accepted through this initiative. Our goal is to continue to grow this and ensure quality. education accessible to all, regardless of their socio-economic status. We are glad that the Hon’ble Minister of School Education, Government of Tamil Nadu could join us in this event to motivate the students. We also thank the Government of Tamil Nadu for all their support,” said Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, and congratulated the students who received the admission letters.

The IIT Madras team is confident that this inclusive and affordable educational model will expand the reach of the IITs by several orders of magnitude and address the pressing need of students for access to high-quality education,” said Professor Vignesh Muthuvijayan, Principal Professor, Graduate Program at IIT Madras .

‘Anaivarukkum IITM’ (IIT Madras for All) is an initiative where IIT Madras has shortlisted and supported a select cohort of 192 students from 58 government and corporation schools in and around Chennai. Based on progressive learning outcomes demonstrated during 14 weeks of in-person training at IIT Madras, 68 students were shortlisted to write the All India Qualifying Examination for admission to the BS degree.

In an effort to make quality education affordable and accessible to all, IIT Madras provides income-based scholarships of up to 75 percent for students pursuing a BS degree. In addition, students who have qualified through collaboration with the Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar Housing Development Corporation (TAHDCO) will receive full financial support from the Government of Tamil Nadu.
