A total of 87 students from over 20 districts in Tamil Nadu have taken admission in the Bachelor of Data Science and Applications, a four-year course first introduced by IIT Madras in 2021 with an aim to make the institute’s quality education affordable. for all. About forty-five of these students from government and corporation schools received their admission letters from School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi on November 5, 2022 at an event held at the IIT Madras campus.

After handing over the acceptance letters, the minister said, “This is in line with the state government’s initiative to make education at premier institutions accessible to government college students and I appreciate the cooperation of IIT Madras BS Degree Program in facilitating this endeavour. We look forward to taking this to the next level as you roll out new programs,” he said.

“The aim of the ‘Anaivarukkum IITM’ initiative is to increase the number of government school students enrolled in our BS programme. We want to continue to develop this and make quality education accessible to everyone, regardless of their socio-economic status,” said prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras.

IIT Madras offers income scholarships up to 75% for students pursuing BS degree. In addition, students who have qualified through collaboration with the Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar Housing Development Corporation (TAHDCO) will receive full financial support from the Government of Tamil Nadu.

M.Manikandan from Tiruvannamalai, who is currently studying Manufacturing Engineering at Anna University, said, “I am an exemplary student and chose this course because it would help me in my internship after I graduate. It is an online course and the videos are pre-recorded and we can study at our leisure,” he said.

In a statement, IIT Madras mentioned that data science enables students to manage data, visualize patterns to gain managerial insights, model uncertainty and build models that help make predictions to make effective business decisions. With extensive hands-on training and experiential learning, students are also well-equipped to meet industry standards.

The course is a platform for creating skilled and employable professionals in a data-driven world. “The IIT Madras team is confident that this inclusive and affordable education model will expand the reach of the IITs by several orders of magnitude and address students’ pressing need for access to high-quality education,” said Vignesh Muthuvijayan, Head of Faculty. , degree program at IIT Madras.

More than 15,000 students are enrolled in the program so far, with the largest number of students from Tamil Nadu, followed by Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.
