NEW DELHI: In 2022, about 93% of Indians plan to spend more or the same on travel compared to a typical pre-pandemic year and 96% said they would like to eat and shop at local businesses to support the local economy, according to a new report American Express Travel report titled “Global Travel Trends Report‘.
Indians think 2022 will be a better year for travel, with a majority of respondents saying travel will be less stressful this year than in 2021. The survey report, based on data from seven countries — the United States, Australia, India, Canada, Mexico, Japan and the United Kingdom — revealed that discovering new experiences motivates 48% of Indians to travel, while 46% seek to relax , and 45% want to explore new destinations.
Impact and purpose travel on the minds of Indian travelers: Most agreed that they want to have a positive impact on the community they are visiting and want to travel to destinations where they can immerse themselves in the local culture. Traveling responsibly is of great importance to those surveyed, with 94% saying they would go “green” and 93% more likely to book travel with a brand that is committed to improving its environmental impact, ranking highest than their global counterparts.
Dream destinations are coming true: About 69% of respondents said they wanted to travel to their dream destination in 2022. Five out of 10 said they were willing to travel solo to their dream destination. Asia is the top choice for Indians to explore in 2022, and exploring different cities in India was the preferred choice of 51% of respondents.
Multiple activities, in-person events and a selection of luxury vacations and destinations: 94% of respondents would prefer to visit destinations that have access to more than one scene (eg beach, city, mountain, desert, etc.), while 91% are interested in cultural immersion and all-inclusive luxury resorts than before the pandemic. 89% of consumers did not travel to major entertainment events last year, but plan to return to such events this year.
Indians are ready to travel and spend more: 92% said they were willing to book a trip for 2022 even if they canceled or changed it later. Almost all Indians surveyed plan to take a trip in 2022, with nearly a quarter saying they will take two vacations and a fifth looking at three vacations during the year. 94% of respondents plan to spend more on international travel in 2022 than the previous year.
Manoj Adlakha, vice president and CEO, American Express Banking, India, said, “After two challenging years, travel sentiment among Indian travelers is upbeat where spending time with loved ones is a priority. Our trends report from travel indicates that to make the most of lost time, 94% of respondents agree that they plan to travel more with family in 2022 than in 2021, while 89% shared that they are more interested in multigenerational family travel than in 2021. never before.”
He added that with the resumption of regular international flights and the upcoming summer holiday season, there has been an increase in travel reservation card members for both international and domestic travel. “To create new memories, Indians are primarily booking vacations with their families and prefer experiences that support local communities’ recovery from the impact of the pandemic.”
