DES MOINES, IOWA – Thursday, November 17, 2022 – Just in time for winter break, Friday, November 18th is the first day of skating season at Brenton Skating Plaza (520 Robert D. Ray Drive) in downtown Des Moines. Open skating will be available from 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM, and opening night will include a special visit from Santa and a festive tree lighting ceremony.

From November to March, Brenton Skating Plaza offers outdoor skating for all ages. Located on the Principal Riverwalk along the Des Moines River, this family entertainment facility and venue opened in 2006 thanks to a gift from the Brenton Foundation.

Open skating is limited to 210 skaters at a time, and each skate lasts one hour and 45 minutes. Online registration is available at DSM.city/BrentonSkatingPlaza to reserve an appointment. Entry will be possible if space permits. Skate rental is also available for those who do not have their own pair.

Opening night festivities will be broadcast live via the City of Des Moines SkyCam at DSM.city/SkyCam and on Mediacom Channel 7 (777 HD).

In addition to the opening night festivities, Des Moines Parks & Recreation has planned a full slate of activities for the season:

  • Learn to skate (19 November, 3 December, 7 and 21 January, 4 and 18 February; 10.30-11.30)
    Free Learn to Skate clinics will be held throughout the skating season, led by professional skating coach Darlene Lewis. All abilities welcome. Ages four and up – even adults can join in the fun! Pre-registration required.
  • Senior Skate (Every Wednesday; 14-15:45)
    Are you over 60 and enjoy skating? If so, this session is for you! For only $5 (admission and skate rental), this is a great opportunity to get some outdoor exercise and socialize with fellow skaters!
  • Flexible skating (December 1, January 5, February 2; 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.)
    Specially designed courses allow individuals with different physical or developmental abilities to skate. For only $5 (admission and skate rental), this skate program is designed to engage these individuals in the sport for recreational activity and enjoyment. All ages are welcome.
  • Homeschool Skate (December 1, January 5, February 2; 1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.)
    Des Moines Parks and Recreation invites homeschooled students to enjoy an afternoon at the ice rink. For just $5 (admission and skate rental), you can enjoy the fresh air and skate with your friends during Homeschool Skate. Age 18 and under.
  • Student evening (Every Thursday; from open to close)
    We invite all students! Every Thursday, Des Moines Parks and Recreation invites students to ice skate! Students must show their school ID to receive a special $5 admission fee with skate rental.
  • MLK Jr. Donate and Skate Day (16 January; 12.00-21.00)
    Donate non-perishable food items and/or new adult-sized socks to Central Iowa Shelter & Services on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Free entry and rental of skates with a donation! All ages are welcome.
  • Family skate date (January 21; 12:00-2:00 p.m.)
    Join Des Moines Parks and Recreation for our 2nd Annual Family Skate Date! This is your chance to come safely to Brenton Skating Plaza for ice skating and family friendly games (Limbo, Four Corners, etc.) on the ice. All friends, family, caregivers and loved ones are welcome. Registration includes entrance fee, skate rental and free refreshments. All ages are welcome. Pre-registration required.
  • Superhero and Princess Skate (February 4; 9-11 am)
    Special guests will be at the Brenton Skating Plaza to meet and greet the skaters. People of all ages are encouraged to dress up in their favorite superhero or prince/princess outfits. Join the fun at the ice rink and take a photo! All ages are welcome. Pre-registration required.
  • Military Appreciation Skate (February 4th and 5th; open to close)
    Current and former military service members receive free admission and skate rentals for themselves and up to three family members. A military ID or other proof of service is required. Free American flags will be awarded to all skaters (while supplies last). Military spotlights will be held once per session. All ages are welcome.
  • Teacher Skate’s praise (February 11; open to close)
    Teachers receive free admission and skate rental on this day. Teachers must show their school ID card. If you’re not a teacher, help support local schools by donating classroom supplies (i.e. pencils, crayons, tissues, and markers). Age 18 and over.
  • Skate for Valentine’s Day (14 February; 17:00-21:00)
    Celebrate Valentine’s Day at Brenton Skating Plaza! Buy one, get one (BOGO) admission and skate rental. Two skates for the price of one! This is the perfect family or date activity for a special holiday. Join us and every skater will receive a cookie and a flower. All ages are welcome.
  • The day after Valentine’s Day Skate (15 February; 17:00-21:00)
    Did you forget it’s Valentine’s Day? Don’t worry, Des Moines Parks and Recreation has you covered! Join us for ticket purchase and skate rental (BOGO). Two skates for the price of one! Each skater receives a cookie and a flower. All ages are welcome.

Brenton Skating Plaza will also be available for hire for private events, a popular option for birthday parties and social retreats.
