The auto show format seems to be losing interest with both attendees and presenters alike.

Mahindra and Mercedes at Auto Expo 2020

Most automotive shows have been on hold since the pandemic hit in 2020, but they are slowly starting to make a comeback. The Auto Expo is India’s largest auto show and is returning in January 2023, after the 2022 edition was postponed. However, it will have fewer stands than before and many brands are giving the event a pass.

The biggest brand missing from the 2023 Auto Expo will be Mahindra, one of the homegrown automakers when it comes to rugged and lifestyle SUVs. It has already revealed its vision for the electric lineup at an event and will host separate events for the launch of the XUV400 EV and the five-door Thar.

Japanese icon Honda is also giving the upcoming Auto Expo a miss, likely focusing its marketing activities on the much-anticipated launch of its new mass-market SUV for India in late 2023. We won’t treat any of its global models like the Honda e. Or cool concepts of it.

Another surprising absentee would be Mercedes-Benz, the most popular luxury automotive brand in India. It has presented a line of both entry-level and top-end performance models at previous shows, even when most other luxury car brands in India withdrew their participation. One of its main rivals, BMW, will also miss the next edition of India’s biggest auto show.

It looks like there will be barely any German automotive representation at the 2023 edition of the Auto Expo with the Volkswagen Group also giving it a pass. This includes both Skoda and Volkswagen, as well as the likes of Audi and Porsche.

The other major, mass-market auto group in India, the Renault-Nissan alliance, is also not expected to be present at the next Auto Expo. While Nissan is rumored to be absent, Renault is also unlikely to be at the show. The French brand’s collection of cool concept cars will surely be missed.

Other notable brands not participating in the 2023 Expo include Jeep, Citroen and Volvo. While the Swedish marque’s absence is somewhat understandable following the big launch of the locally assembled XC40 Recharge, we were hoping to see the Stellantis brands showcasing their current and future hits.

However, the 2023 Auto Expo is not going to be filled with empty halls. Those who attend the event can expect a huge display from brands like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Kia, Tata, MG and more. Stay connected with CarDekho for more updates on 2023 Auto Expo.
