In this edition of Zig’s performance testing competition, we pit the Mahindra Scorpio N and the XUV700 once again. While the previous report was with a diesel automatic powertrain, this time we have a petrol automatic option. On paper, the 2-litre turbo-petrol engine produces 200PS in both models mated to a 6-speed automatic. However, the Scorpio N is rear-wheel drive and based on a body-on-chassis platform, while the XUV700 uses front-wheel drive and monocoque architecture.

What difference does it make on the road? Well, let’s find out:

Acceleration test

Mahindra XUV700

0-100 kmph

10.16 seconds

9.48 seconds

20-80 km/h

6.21 seconds

5.85 seconds

Despite both models using the same engine, it is the Mahindra XUV700 that manages to beat the Scorpio in the sprint race. We suspect it boils down to the fact that the XUV700 is based on a more car-like and lightweight monocoque platform as opposed to the Scorpio N’s heavier body-on-frame construction. Also, the difference in engine tuning is another reason for the XUV posting better times. Also, the Scorpio N was slightly slower than the XUV700 in the roll-on acceleration test.

Braking test

On paper, both the SUVs have identical brake hardware with discs at all four corners. However, the XUV700 has slightly narrower 235 section tires compared to the Scorpio N’s 245 section shoes. Does this help in Scorpio N’s favor?

100-0 km/h

45.98 meters

35.48 meters

80-0 km/h

28.14 meters

24.89 meters

Sadly, the tide is not in Scorpio N’s favor as the XUV700 posted significantly better numbers. The monocoque SUV has much stronger brakes, however, both models have a satisfying pedal feel.

Price and decision

Mahindra XUV700

Ex-showroom price

11.99 lakh to Rs.23.9 lakh

13.44 lakh to 24.94 lakh rupees

In the confines of this test, it’s the more road-friendly Mahindra XUV700 that manages to win. Its 200PS engine is quick on the road, and there’s better braking hardware to keep you going at high speeds. However, if your daily driving involves a mix of rough and on-road terrain, you should consider the Scorpio N.
