Mahindra is all set to ramp up production of its SUVs in a big way, from the current monthly production capacity of 29,000 units to 49,000 units by FY2024. In other words, Mahindra plans to almost double production in the next 12-15 months. , and this should dramatically reduce waiting times for the carmaker’s 3 most popular vehicles – the just-launched Scorpio-N, the flagship XUV700 and the iconic Thar off-roader. Mahindra is also ramping up production of the XUV300 in anticipation of strong demand for its electric variant – the XUV400, which will be delivered to customers early next year.

Here’s a quick look at the various production boosts that Mahindra is planning for certain SUV models,

  • The production of XUV300, XUV400 will go up to 9,500 units per month, from the current production of 5,000 units per month.
  • Thar’s current production will increase from 4000 units per month to 6000 units per month.

While the recently launched Mahindra Scorpio-N comes with a waiting time of up to 72 weeks, the XUV700 extends the waiting time to 72 weeks for certain variants. The Scorpio Classic commands waiting times of 15 months while the Thar is available with waiting times between 3-12 weeks – much higher than the 9-month waiting time of the off-roader ordered a year ago.

What has changed in Thar?

In the case of the Thar, initial demand for the off-roader has been met, and the main reason for Mahindra to ramp up production is anticipation of the upcoming 5-door variant. A 5-door version of the Mahindra Thar will be launched sometime next year. There is a huge backlog of new SUV launches like the XUV700 and Scorpio-N which Mahindra will clear by ramping up production in the coming months.

Next big launches for Mahindra

The XUV400 electric compact SUV will be the first off the block early next year. Mahindra has already showcased the XUV400, and revealed the specifications of the electric SUV. The XUV400 is taller than the XUV300, and offers a more usable boot. Although it is heavier, it is faster than the internal combustion engine XUV300 thanks to the electric motor producing idle peak torque. The XUV400 may be priced similar to the Tata Nexon EV, which starts at around Rs. 14 lakhs for the base term.

Next is the 5-door version of the Thar, which is being tested at a rapid pace. A 5-door version of the Mahindra Thar will make the off-roader much more family-friendly, and some Scorpio-N customers may opt for the larger Thar. The 5-door Thar is expected to use the same 2.2-litre turbo-diesel and 2-litre turbo-petrol engines that are also seen on the 3-door model, but with higher levels of tune. Manual and automatic gearboxes will be offered on the 5-door variant.
