Mahindra XUV700 Road Trip to Udaipur | Tech US News


NH8 is a great highway to drive for miles, but it has a lot of potholes.

Every year during the Diwali holidays, we have a family tradition of going on a road trip. Now, I have been to Udaipur many times but my family was there only once so this time we decided to drive to Udaipur during the festive season and relax a bit. We were only three people and some luggage but decided to take an SUV because our roads can bring unexpected surprises!

The festive season meant the highway was relatively empty.

Mahindra XUV700 was my vehicle of choice for this trip and I had the diesel manual AX7L variant with me. I have actually driven the petrol auto and diesel auto variants quite extensively but I only drove the diesel manual once during my first drive of the SUV at Mahindra’s SUV Proving Track in 2021. Wanted to get a proper taste of it. Diesel MT on long drives.

We packed our bags, folded the third row seats and left Mumbai at 10:30 AM. I was expecting traffic on the way at the dreaded Fountain Junction but it was surprisingly empty (probably because of the holiday) and we quickly exited Mumbai. The highway was in pretty average condition at many places and there were more than a few potholes. I had nothing to worry about thanks to the XUV’s strong tires and durable suspension, and I didn’t have to slow down much whenever we crossed a bump.

The roads started to improve towards Gujarat and I was maintaining a good pace. I turned off the lane keep assist and AEB features as I personally find them too intrusive. In fact I do this in every ADAS-enabled car I drive. I had the cruise control set to 90 km/h (speed limit was 100) and the traffic was really light that day. We stopped at Valsad for lunch around 1:30 PM and then proceeded to Vadodara where we reached by 5:30 PM. Planned to stay here for a couple of days due to festival.

As you get out of Maharashtra, the road quality gets so much better.

In the evening, we headed out to different places to eat and six of us were traveling in a car. My cousins ​​found the last row comfortable for an hour-long drive and had a lot of fun playing with all the tech in the car. I drove about 450 km on the first day and the fuel tank was still at half capacity. I STOPPED THE VEHICLE AT THE SPEED BREAKER IN GUJARAT AND AFTER RESTARTING, THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER STARTED SHOWING A “HILL HOLD CONTROL ERROR” WARNING. I restarted the car and the warning disappeared.

After spending a day in Vadodara we left for Udaipur. On my way to or from Udaipur, I always take the Halul to Godhra route and this time was no different. The road is in good shape and although it is not very wide and has some local traffic, it really reduces the travel time compared to the Ahmedabad route. It took us around 5 hours to reach Udaipur with a non-stop drive. Once we entered Rajasthan the roads really opened up and I would say Rajasthan has some of the best roads in the country. Well-paved wide highways with smooth curves meant I had a blast driving the XUV700 here. The diesel engine always feels very responsive and power is instantly available at the tap of the throttle.

The trip meter read 792 km and the reserve fuel light came on. The XUV700 actually reached Udaipur without a single fuel stop and the average fuel economy was close to 16.5 kmpl which is excellent for such a powerful and heavy SUV. I refueled on the highway and the tank took about 45 liters of diesel. We then drove down to our hotel which was right in the center of town, parked and rested a bit before heading out.

I love the cuisine that Rajasthan has to offer and I wanted to have a different chaat in the evening. We drove towards Sakhadiya circle, parked the car a little further at a safe place and started from here. It was very crowded and the place was packed with people. I had a quick bite and then we decided to go to a nice lakeside restaurant for a quiet dinner. It took about 20 minutes to drive to Fateh Sagar Lake and we found a nice restaurant with rooftop seating, which had a great view of the lake. The environment was very good and the climate was also very pleasant. We retired for the day after a wonderful dinner.

No trip to Udaipur is complete without a visit to JMB

The next day after a late breakfast, we again went for a walk around the city and also went to click some photos at the lake. After that, my family wanted to do some local shopping and we had to buy some delicacies from JMB which is a very famous sweet shop in Udaipur. Some of the internal roads in Udaipur can be quite narrow during peak hours and parking may be difficult to find, in which case I would suggest leaving the car at the hotel and using a rickshaw for short local trips. Rickshaws are not metered here and drivers quote ridiculous charges so make sure you negotiate properly.

Later, we left for Vadodara via the same Godhra route but it took around 6 hours to reach us due to evening traffic in the city. The XUV700 was making us all comfortable. I was the sole driver for the entire trip and my only gripe is that Apple CarPlay was not yet activated on the car which meant I had to keep looking at my phone using the navigation.

After spending a day in Vadodara and taking care of some errands, we left for Mumbai. Started at 5:30 am, stopped again at Wilsad at 9:00 for a quick bite and then had a fuel stop just after the foothills. The car had covered 820 km on a full tank this time (I had refueled before entering Udaipur). There was not much traffic but there was some congestion before entering Mumbai and we reached home at 12:30 which is reasonable.

My family has taken a new liking to the Mahindra XUV700 after this trip and rightly so. In fact, I enjoyed the drive too and the next day I had a shoot in Pune for which I took the XUV700 again as we had a lot of video equipment with us as we headed to an offbeat destination. Location In total, I drove this vehicle for a little over 1900 km over a period of 7 days. I was initially concerned about the manual as I thought it might be cumbersome but the light clutch and comfortable seating position meant there was barely any fatigue even after long hours behind the wheel. I said goodbye to the 700 after returning to Mumbai but hope to see the car again soon.
