Mikey Antonio has bravely revealed he almost retired from football during his previous spell at West Ham because his mental health was so poor.

The Jamaican international has been with the Hammers since 2015 and has become a star during his time at the club.

He transformed from a right full-back to a winger and then to the club’s best centre-forward.

Antonio scored 66 goals during his time with the Irons and has now admitted he was left so low under the previous manager, who he did not name, that he considered retiring from the game altogether.

On the Under The Surface podcast, Mikey said: “It really hit me once.

“I’m a person who likes to control things – if I feel I can control them, I’ll deal with things. But this time where it hit me, I felt like I fell into depression.

“I started the first game of the season. The next game I wasn’t in the team. The next game I started. The next game I wasn’t in the team. Then I came off the bench. I started the next game and came off at halftime. And it happened it just happened.

“Even if I was playing well, it kept happening to me. No matter what I did, I wasn’t good enough. If I had a great game, it wasn’t good enough. So I just felt helpless and I couldn’t do anything.”

He admits that he was so low that he cried in bed in front of his wife and confessed to her that he was ready to give up football altogether.

In one of the bravest confessions we’ve seen from Hammer, Mikey said: “I don’t like to show emotions and I like to deal with things, and in bed tears were falling from my eyes.

“My lady was laying next to me in bed and I didn’t say anything, just tears falling – she looked up and said ‘Are you all right?’ and I said yes I’m fine and she said ‘You can’t be fine you’re crying’ and I said ‘I don’t know if I want to play football anymore’.

He added: I said to her, ‘I don’t know if I want to play anymore, I’m thinking about retiring’ because I knew if I went to West Ham and said I wanted to leave, they wouldn’t want that. sell me So I was honestly just thinking about quitting football and retiring.”

We are always with you, Mikey.
