NBC’s relaunch of Quantum Leap has made its time travel fresher than ever, opening up new possibilities for the show.

NBC’s Quantum Leap relaunch made his time travel cooler than ever. Few sci-fi franchises handle time travel in anything remotely resembling a consistent manner. There are good reasons for this, of course; Time travel is a theoretical science, and these are movies and TV shows, not theoretical essays on time mechanics. Quantum LeapHowever, ‘s time travel was one of the most nebulous, because it was basically an excuse to throw its star Sam Beckett into crisis after crisis.

NBC’s Quantum Leap however, the relaunch is taking a different approach. He has made time travel a central component of the story, and is even establishing loose models of time mechanics. These are still at the service of the plot, of course, serving mainly to explain Ben Song’s adventures in the distant past and his goal of reaching the future. It is the most logically consistent Quantum Leap it already has been, and it’s interesting to note that the approach opens up countless possibilities for new stories. The traditional fear is that time travel models tie the franchise down too much, but Quantum Leap now proves that is not the case.

Quantum Leap’s time travel is becoming much better defined

Quantum Leap Ben remembers the reason

Quantum LeapThe rules of time travel have traditionally been very basic. The show’s main characters enter the Quantum Leap accelerator, which transports them to the past; there is conflicting evidence as to whether this is a physical leap or just some sort of psychic leap. Whatever the case, the result is the same; the jumper projects himself into a person’s body in the past, and must live his life for a few days, correcting something that went wrong in the original timeline.

Previously, it had only been possible for a jumper to travel to the past during their own lifetime (with an exception for Sam Beckett, based on his jump to one of his own descendants). Ben Song discovered that it was possible to create a kind of temporary boost through multiple jumps. This gives the Quantum Leap relaunching a reason to exist beyond mere nostalgia, because it really is taking ideas to the next level; Ben figured out how to use that boost to travel to the distant past, and potentially even the future. This is the real reason he entered the Quantum Leap accelerator in the first place, because he sought to find a way to prevent a future tragedy rather than correct a past one.

Quantum Leap previously it was a fairly predictable show, with a jumper entering a person’s life and making a small adjustment to the timeline. However, the idea of ‚Äč‚Äčtraveling back in time changes everything, because the ripple effects of a jumper’s actions are much more noticeable; already Quantum Leap made its biggest change in history, with an entire city added to the timeline. Traveling to the future will also completely change the dynamic of the show, because the project team – traditionally advisors – will also be out of their depth in the future. Quantum Leap it really opened up some incredible new stories possible, making your time travel cooler than ever.

Quantum Leap will return on NBC on Monday, January 2, 2023. The episode will be available to stream exclusively on Peacock the following day.
