The online application process for admission to all government and non-government high schools for the upcoming academic period will begin on November 16.

The deadline for submission is December 6 at 5 p.m., said prof. Nehal Ahmed, Director General, Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE).

He said that the necessary instructions on the admission process have already been uploaded on the DSHE website.

DSHE has fixed December 10 as the date of the central draw for admission to all government schools and December 13 for non-government schools.

Non-government schools in metropolitan areas and Sadar upazilas will come under central lottery. However, non-government schools that are not part of the central draw will also have to conduct the draw through committees approved by the Ministry of Education.

Applications for government and non-government schools will have to be submitted through the website “gsa.teletalk.com.bd”.

Students could choose five schools against one form. The cost of the form is fixed at Tk 110 and the fee can be deposited from Teletalk prepaid mobile phones.

All schools should complete the admissions process by December 28.

Children six years of age and older will be able to enroll in the first grade.

In the last decade, admissions to Class I across the country were done by lottery. Last year, the government introduced a lottery system for all secondary school classes.

However, the admission process at state primary schools is completely different. Schools enroll all students who apply, and no entrance exam is required.

Every year, millions of students and their guardians across the country wait for admission day. Most students are enrolled in the 1st grade at the beginning of their academic life and in the 6th grade. class after completing primary school education.

According to the Directorate for Basic Education, in 2021, 3,250,251 students were enrolled in first grade across the country. In the same year, according to the Bangladesh Bureau of Education Information and Statistics, in VI. class enrolled 21 09 353 students.

DSHE’s objective in introducing the lottery system was to reduce the problems of students and guardians who previously had to go from one school to another in search of admission.

Another objective was to mitigate “allegations of irregularities and corruption” in the admission process at non-government schools, top officials of the directorate told The Daily Star.

Before the lottery system, all schools accepted students only on the basis of available places.
