Moore said after the game: “He and Icky (Michael Ihiekwe) will get credit for the clean sheet but as an individual I think he’s been great for us. We were really happy to get him on. when we got him on I was really surprised that he was available so without hesitation I called him on the phone.

“He was ready to go to another club and the fans see a solid individual who is technically good on the ball, but he is equally strong in defence. The icing on the cake for him was the goal today.”

McGuinness is the only Wednesday centre-back to score this season after heading in Barry Bannan’s corner at the weekend, but Moore will be hoping his defenders can do more as the whole squad continues to contribute this season to the goals. So far, 18 different players have scored in all competitions.
