The South Carolina Office of the Comptroller General says 130 state agencies spent $47 million on travel in fiscal year 2022.

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) – The South Carolina Office of the Comptroller General says 130 state agencies spent $47 million on travel in fiscal year 2022.

The results show an increase in spending compared to the $16.2 million spent on travel in fiscal year 2021. The nearly threefold increase in spending was likely due to Covid travel restrictions, the report said.

In a press release obtained by ABC Columbia News, State Comptroller General Richard Eckstrom challenges agency directors to cut their travel spending by at least 5%. This cut will save state government more than $2.3 million this year, officials said. “Agency directors must closely monitor travel spending. They must also be aware that some trips may be less necessary than others,” Eckstrom said.

The state’s four-year institutions of higher education were responsible for $21.9 million of total state government travel spending for the year. These travel expenses increased in fiscal year 2022 compared to the $4.1 million schools spent in fiscal year 2021.
