This is your weekend post—a few days early—as El Paso Matters helps you plan family-friendly holiday events on the border starting with Thanksgiving.

Glasheen, Valles & Inderman Injury Lawyers Sun Bowl Parade begins at 10 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, along Montana Avenue from Ochoa Street to Copia Street. This year’s theme is “Mardi Gras, El Paso Style,” and the grand marshals are Jimmy Rogers Jr. and John Folmer. The parade will be broadcast live on KTSM Channel 9 and online at ktsm.com. Holiday lights on the lake, of El Paso County, begins at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Ascarate Park, 6900 Delta Drive, and will feature Fred Loya’s popular synchronized light show for the first time. The holiday display is open daily through December 25 with synchronized light shows, vendors and food trucks on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Featuring Santa Claus and the Grinch. Free entry. WinterFest: The City of E Paso’s annual winter holiday event runs daily through Jan. 1 at San Jacinto Plaza and Arts Festival Plaza downtown. The event features lighting, ice skating, music and entertainment, as well as art and food vendors at the holiday market. Free entry; rink prices are different. Special activities at the El Paso Museum of Art and the El Paso Museum of History and on the El Paso Tramway. Information: epwinterfest.com.

Holiday Movies at the Plaza Theater: As part of WinterFest, holiday classics like “A Christmas Story” will play Sundays through Dec. 18 at the Plaza Theatre, 125 Pioneer Plaza. Free entry. Information: epwinterfest.com/holiday-movies.

Holidays at the ice rink: The El Paso Hockey Association’s public ice skating is on select days through Jan. 1 at the El Paso County Special Events Center, 4100 E. Paisano Drive. Admission is $15. Free skate rental. Information: elpasohockey.org/publicskating.

Las Cruces Annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony: The event is set for December 3rd from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at the Plaza de Las Cruces, 100 N. Main Street in Las Cruces, with a tree lighting at 7:00pm. Live music, entertainment, food trucks and activities. Free entry. “A Christmas Story” will be shown at 8 p.m. at the Rio Grande Theater, 211 N. Main Street, Las Cruces. $5 per person. Information: lascruces.gov.

Parade of Lights and Luminaria Festival: The City of San Elizario’s annual event will be held at Socorro Road and Chicken Ranch Road in San Elizario on Dec. 17 at 6 p.m. Lighted floats, posadas, luminarias, music, dancing and vendors. Free entry. Information: sanelizariohistoricdistrict.com.
