AAANashville, TN – AAA predicts 54.6 million Americans will drive 50 miles or more from home this Thanksgiving. This national figure remains slightly below pre-pandemic levels.

The same travel trend is seen in Tennessee, as this year is expected to be the busiest Thanksgiving since 2019.

AAA predicts more than 1.2 million Tennesseans will drive 50 miles or more for Thanksgiving. That’s 16,000 (1.3%) more Tennessee travelers than last year’s holiday and just 6,700 (0.5%) fewer than 2019.

“Travel is still recovering from the pandemic,” said Debbie Haas, vice president of travel at AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Even as gas prices and other inflationary pressures weigh on budgets, travel remains a priority for Americans, especially during the holidays. Travel spending is at its highest level since the pandemic began, a driver of our projections this year AAA expects busy roads and long lines at the airport, so leave early and be flexible with your travel plans.

89% of holiday travelers will drive

Despite higher gas prices, 89% of all Thanksgiving travelers will drive. AAA predicts that 48.65 million Americans will take a vacation trip. There are 203,000 more drivers than last year.

In Tennessee, 1.2 million will take a road trip; an increase of 12,000 people over last year’s holiday.

Gasoline prices to test record highs for the holidays

Pump prices have been fluctuating this month and could set new highs for the holidays. In Tennessee, the highest average daily price for Thanksgiving was set in 2012 at $3.18 per gallon. On Monday, drivers paid an average price of $3.30 per gallon. That’s 20 cents more than Tennessee drivers paid last Thanksgiving ($3.10).

“Higher gas prices don’t seem to be enough to stop people from traveling to be with family and friends,” said Megan Cooper, spokeswoman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “We’ve found that when gas prices are high, travelers look to offset the added cost by spending less on a hotel, shopping or dining out.”

Travelers can use the free AAA mobile app to compare gas prices, find certified repair shops and member discounts in their area while traveling.

Busier days to travel

If you’re hitting the road for the holidays, leave early. Travelers should expect much heavier than normal congestion Monday through Wednesday afternoon and early evening. Traffic will be lighter during the morning and late evening and on Thanksgiving Day.

AAA hopes to rescue 411,000 stranded drivers

More than 411,000 drivers will need AAA roadside assistance over the holiday weekend. The most common reasons are dead batteries, flat tires and lockouts.

AAA encourages drivers to do a full vehicle inspection before hitting the road to check everything from the tires, oil, air filter and wiper blades. AAA has a list of certified mechanics at AAA.com/AutoRepair.

AAA reminds drivers to ‘move over for min’

With more people sharing the roads, the danger multiplies for those on the side of the road. AAA reminds drivers to slow down and pull over for first responders and tow trucks. We also ask that you extend the same courtesy to people with disabled vehicles.

“We want to make sure all holiday travelers, tow truck drivers and first responders get home safely this Thanksgiving,” Cooper said. “Please be courteous and move over to see flashing lights, whether it’s a tow truck or disabled vehicle with hazard lights on.”

Air travel is approaching pre-pandemic levels

In addition to road congestion, Thanksgiving travelers are also likely to encounter long lines at the airport. Nationally, air travel is up nearly 8% from last year, with 4.5 million Americans flying to their Thanksgiving destinations this year. This represents an increase of more than 330,000 air passengers and almost 99% of the 2019 volume.

It is not uncommon for flight delays and even cancellations to occur at this time of year, due to the winter weather, staffing issues and high demand.

AAA offers the following tips for air travelers:

  • Check in early online.
  • Monitor your flight status using your airline’s mobile app.
  • Please arrive 2-3 hours before scheduled departure.
  • Pack medications and an extra set of clothes in your carry-on bag, in case your flight is delayed or canceled.

Tips for air travelers who haven’t booked their flight yet:

  • Book a flight that leaves early in the day. Afternoon and evening flights are more susceptible to delays and cancellations.
  • Book a direct flight. Otherwise, build in extra time between connections, in case your first flight is delayed.
  • Consider traveling on Thanksgiving. This could offer the best combination of availability and price.

“It’s not too late to buy travel insurance, which can be very valuable to air travelers,” Haas said. “There are policies that can provide compensation for flight delays of as little as three hours. And if your flight is canceled, passengers can receive compensation for covered out-of-pocket expenses.”

Thanksgiving holiday travel period

For purposes of this forecast, the Thanksgiving travel period is defined as the five-day period between Wednesday, November 23 and Sunday, November 27. The period from Wednesday to Sunday is consistent with previous years.

Vacation forecast methodology

In cooperation with AAA, S&P Global Market Intelligence has developed a unique methodology to forecast actual domestic travel volumes. The economic variables used to forecast travel for the current holiday are drawn from S&P Global Market Intelligence’s proprietary databases.

These data include macroeconomic drivers such as employment; output; household net worth; asset prices, including stock indices; interest rates; real estate market indicators and variables related to travel and tourism, including gas prices, air travel and hotel stays. AAA and S&P Global Market Intelligence have quantified vacation travel volumes going back to 2000.

Historical travel volume estimates are from DK SHIFFLET’s TRAVEL PERFORMANCE/Monitorsm. The PERFORMANCE/Monitorsm is a comprehensive study that measures the travel behavior of US residents. DK SHIFFLET reaches out to more than 50,000 US households each month for detailed travel data, resulting in the unique ability to estimate visitor volume and spending, identify trends and predict US travel behavior, all after making the trips.

The travel forecast is reported on personal trips. In particular, AAA and S&P Global Market Intelligence forecast the total volume of US holiday travel and the intended mode of transportation. The travel forecast presented in this report was prepared for the week of October 10, 2022.
