SPRINGFIELD – The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum will offer free admission to military veterans this Friday, Nov. 11, on Veterans Day.

On the day, the Airlifter Brass military band will perform and a commemorative flame will be lit in front of the museum.

Military veterans and active duty personnel are asked to bring an ID.

“President Lincoln wrote that we should give ‘honor to the soldiers and sailors everywhere who bear the cause of their country.’ The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum is proud to play its small part in presenting this honor,” said Christina Shutt, ALPLM Executive Director. “We hope that everyone who visits us on this day will think about the sacrifices made by America’s veterans.”

The Airlifter Brass band will perform from 1 to 2 p.m. and is part of the Mid-America Air Force Band at Scott Air Force Base. The band includes two trumpets, French horn, trombone, tuba and percussion.

The memorial flame in front of the museum will feature the emblems of the US military branches and quotes from Abraham Lincoln’s “Gettysburg Address.”

U.S. Navy Seaman 1st Class David Russell sought refuge below the deck of the USS Oklahoma when Japanese bombs began to fall on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. But a split-second decision changed his mind and likely saved his life. “I thought, ‘What am I doing down here?’ I was trained as an anti-aircraft loader,” says Russell, now 101. “I went sideways. By the time I went over the side, the ship was almost ready to capsize.” Russell plans to return to Pearl Harbor on Tuesday for a memorial service for those who died. The event marks the 80th anniversary of the attack that launched the U.S. into World War II Oklahoma lost 429 sailors and marines, the second highest death toll that day after the USS Arizona’s 1,177.Over 2,300 American servicemen were killed in total.
