Hyderabad: In order for meritorious students to secure a seat in on-site admissions in private professional especially engineering colleges in the country, the technical education department is planning centralized on-site admissions through online counseling from the next academic year viz. 2023-24. .

Plans are afoot to end the current practice of on-the-spot institutional admissions and internal sliding (change of course within the same college) for various professional courses offered by unaided private colleges, as most of them have been found to be in violation of merit rules and reservations.

In concrete case, in on-site admissions for engineering, the vacancies are first to be filled by internal sliding and the resulting vacancies are to be filled up under on-site admissions. However, several private engineering colleges have adopted this rule, according to officials.

Further, candidates who have cleared Telangana State Engineering, Agriculture and Medical Common Entrance Test (TS EAMCET) and passed Intermediate should be given first preference in order of merit followed by candidates without TS EAMCET and passed Intermediate degree. Even the faculties despised this rule and accept students who pay more registration fees or on a first-come, first-served basis. Apart from this, TS EAMCET qualified and unqualified candidates have to shell out Rs 1300 and Rs 2100 for processing fee at each engineering college for on-site admission.

In this academic year, the department piloted centralized on-site admissions for admission of students to state polytechnics in the country.

“Centralized on-site reception will ensure merit and reservations. Under this new system, one application and fee will be sufficient for admission to all the participating colleges instead of the current practice of submitting separate applications and paying the fee at each college,” the official said.

In this academic year 2022-2023, a total of 61,702 engineering posts were filled out of 79,346 under the convenor quota in 177 faculties. The number of enrollments increased compared to last year, when 57,545 out of 79,822 places were filled at 175 faculties. Officials attributed the increased admissions to the large number of students enrolling in courses like computer science and engineering, artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, robotics, etc.
