On Thursday, the European Parliament opened the way for Croatia to be admitted to the Schengen area without passports, leaving the final decision in the hands of EU government leaders.

The DZ voted with a majority of 534 to 53 to abolish the remaining border controls between the Schengen area and Croatia.

Now a final decision will have to be made The EU Council, which consists of the 27 EU heads of governmentwhich already confirmed last December that Croatia meets all the criteria for entry into the Schengen area.

“The city of Croatia is in Schengen. The criteria have been met. The European Parliament has given the green light. Now the EU Council must deliver results,” EP President Roberta Metsola wrote in a tweet after the vote.

The Schengen area is the largest passport-free area in the world, enables unrestricted movement of people between 26 European countries.
