Rovers’ ability to field a healthy squad for much of the opening stretch of the season is down to the club’s planning and medical departments, says Jon Dahl Tomasson.

Long-term absentee Sam Barnes, whose ACL injury he suffered in training in August, is the only player currently on the treatment table despite his busy schedule.

Rovers take on local rivals Burnley tomorrow in their final game before the World Cup break, the 24th game in all competitions since the start of the season on July 30.

Although Rovers struggled at the start of the season in certain positions, the squad has remained largely healthy since then, giving Tomasson plenty of options to choose from.

He was able to rest a number of key players in the Carabao Cup clash with West Ham United in midweek, where a much-changed side won on penalties, and Tomasson says his side are ‘really ready’ for the first East Lancashire derby. season.

“We try to plan well,” he said.

“The medical and physical departments plan well, they do a great job, having the whole team is an incentive.

“I used the team all year, first of all for a good performance, but also for the development of the players.

“Right now, we’re happy that everyone is ready, and I can promise you that they really are.”

Tomasson rotated his options, keeping an eye on the players’ workload, which included as much rest as there was playing time for the under-21s.

Several players made the starting XI for the first time since August against West Ham and their performances gave Tomasson plenty of confidence.

He added: “That’s what you want, healthy competition in a competitive team.

“If you look at the spirit we’ve developed over time, you saw that the other day in London.

“We had some players who didn’t play that much and we won five out of six and they were giant killers that day. It shows the spirit in the team.

“It’s a very good foundation to build on.”

“I’ve always said that you can always give a manager confidence in a minute if you do the right thing.

“A lot of players did the right things the other day and it’s also about professionalism and the right attitude because of course we can get around Ben’s 50th goal and he will also be a very important player against Burnley.

“But our main star is the team.”

Tomasson is expected to go with a back three, making his top choice whether to go with Ryan Hedges or Sam Szmodics alongside Sam Gallagher and Ben Brereton in attack.
