Travel may be at a standstill during the COVID-19 pandemic, but Americans are busy booking travel plans for next year as more people get vaccinated and countries continue to open their borders once again, according to new research.

“Travel in 2023 looks strong,” said Audrey Hendley, president of American Express Travel. Count Nast Traveler.

“As borders continue to reopen, people are not only thinking about big international trips, they’re booking them,” Hendley continued. “Whether you’re traveling alone, with friends or with family, there truly is a trip for everyone.”

To that end, American Express Travel has released its list of trending destinations for 2023, and some of those destinations are certainly daring.

Based on research, here are the top 10 trending destinations for 2023 according to American Express Travel:

  1. Copenhagen, Denmark
  2. The Florida Keys
  3. Istanbul, Turkey
  4. Lisbon, Portugal
  5. Mexico City, Mexico
  6. Montenegro
  7. Paris, France
  8. Sydney, Australia
  9. Woodstock, Vermont
  10. Yaukuve Island, Fiji

In case you’re wondering, here’s how the research was conducted: Morning Consult conducted an online survey between September 30 and October 3, 2022 of 2,000 US travelers who are American Express card members and who previously booked travel with American Express Travel. These travelers have a household income of at least $70,000 and are defined as adults who regularly travel by air at least once a year.

Other significant findings

“I think the pandemic has changed the way a lot of people think about travel,” Hendley said, according to Travel Weekly.

“We don’t take it for granted anymore. We know it’s something we love,” Hendley continued. “We know it’s something we want to do, but we’ve had time to sit down and think a little bit about why we travel: what’s meaningful to us when we travel.”

In fact, as Hendley points out, research has shown that survey participants’ ideas about travel have changed. For example, 70 percent of respondents said they want to travel to bucket list destinations in 2023.

Interestingly, respondents also plan “vacations with holistic health in mind.” For example, 89 percent of respondents said they want to take a trip to escape the routine, while 74 percent said they plan to travel more in 2023 for their well-being.

With these findings in mind, it’s not surprising to also learn that 49 percent of respondents said they plan to seek out activities like spa treatments and meditation sessions while on vacation to improve their overall well-being.
