The last few years have been a rollercoaster ride for the travel industry, so much so that the typical playbook when it comes to what consumers want has essentially been thrown out the window in favor of what consumers can actually do.

But as the world is returning to normal and COVID-19 is no longer the main topic of conversation, options abound again for consumers and travel advisors may once again have an almost full world to sell.

To get a sense of the trends for the coming year, TMR asked top travel advisors about the destinations that come up most often in conversations with their clients and why. Here’s what they said:

Where to go in 2023 in Greece

1. European favourites
Even with open borders and largely relaxed health and safety protocols for 2022, travel advisors speaking to TMR still see a return to old favorites in Europe as the most likely scenario for 2023.

Rachel Gálvez of Indiana’s Personal Travel Agency said “we’ve already seen a shift that way by 2022,” and Paul Hutton, a consultant at Cruise Planners in Spokane, Washington, added that it’s been “too long since travelers have been able to return.” and complete their explorations”.

In particular, advisers cited the strength of the US dollar as a way for consumers to get value in increasingly expensive travel and prices comparable to other favorites closer to home.

“Airfare is better and hotel prices are better than in the US. People are ready to invest in a vacation to remember,” said Barbara Linebarger of Delightful Memories Travel in Marietta, Georgia.

Europe is “More accessible and people have not been able to go in recent years. Plus, flights to Europe are priced similarly to flights to Mexico and the Caribbean,” said Kerri Dickson of Sapphire Adventures LLC in Washington.

In particular, the advisers agreed on some specific European favourites, including Italy, France, Ireland and the United Kingdom

“Many people are looking to explore Ireland. Its beauty, culture and history are big draws. The fact that it’s mostly English-speaking makes it easy to travel,” said Megan Lamovec of Wisconsin’s Summit to Sea.

“All of Europe is for sale due to the strength of the dollar, but Italy will remain a key destination in 2023,” AAA’s Bryan Shilling told TMR.

The top answer among advisors remains Greece, which appears to be the top choice for many consumers

“I have many clients who have booked Greece. Trend due to climate, desired location, tours,” said Laura Palmer of Vai Travel in South Carolina.

“Increased air service from our market, favorable prices and it seems to be something that people are talking about on social media,” said Jenny Cagle of Elm Grove Travel in Wisconsin.

2. List of destinations, including one in particular
The thinking of some coming out of the pandemic was that, with the lack of opportunity in the past two years, more consumers would be more motivated to tick off bucket-list destinations. Advisors who spoke to TMR said that while signature European destinations remain at the top of their clients’ lists, bucket-list destinations are also trending for next year, a welcome sign for advisors specializing in out-of-the-way locations of the common roads.

“It’s more about ready-made experiences, so more exciting destinations like northern lights or wilderness and wilderness adventures,” said Alana Wallace of Scottsdale, Arizona’s Holiday Cruises and Tours.

Which destination is really going to be the winner in the free list category next year? Courtney Samuels of Craig Travel in Toronto, for example, specifically mentioned Holy Land Tours as a bucket list destination trending for her clients in 2023. And Diane Manson of Mountain City Travel in Kimberly, British Columbia , said polar destinations will be a big winner next year. year, “Travelers are living their dream,” he said.

The only bucket list destination cited by advisers who chose the category was New Zealand, a country which, after being closed for most of the past three years, is receiving more direct air service from North America.

“The country has been closed for so long that the demand for cruises and land travel through this diverse country is now greater than it was before COVID,” said Bob Shaffer of Florida Cruises and Travel Experts.

“It’s finally open without restrictions. Almost every citizen is vaccinated. New Zealand is making a big push to bring business back to the country,” said Anna Bright of Anna Bright Luxury Travel in Nashville, Tennessee.

“New Zealand has been off limits for a long time during the pandemic, so I think travelers want to take advantage of the reopening there and see this beautiful country. Also, travelers seem to be focused on big trips post-pandemic, and for North American travelers it’s a long trip to the South Pacific, so many feel it’s now or never,” said Laura Derksen of Personal Travel Management in Burnaby, British Columbia.

“Repressed desire and so much to offer that is a departure from the norm even though English is spoken. Adventurous but with a hint of familiarity,” said Aaron Sidner of IKP Travel in St. Paul, Minnesota.

3. The Caribbean
The Caribbean was one of the pandemic’s big winners: outside of some domestic favorites, North American travelers had only a few options until European and other international borders reopened in 2022. the Caribbean in 2021 and 22 and, according to travel advisors, is now to slow down

“Easy…people want to go so they find the best package and go. AIs make it really easy to do that,” Kelly Belliveau of Nova Scotia’s Our Destinations Travel told TMR.

There is one Caribbean destination in particular that the advisors went to and that is Costa Rica. Tena Reid of Ellison Travel & Tours in Exeter, Ont., said she had “a lot of questions about the country and the accommodations and tours available. Everyone who comes back had a wonderful time and tells their friends. People feel safe in Costa Rica . There are so many different experiences on offer. Something for everyone.”

Costa Rica has also recognized the power of trade, which many said could lead to a boost in its ability to pitch it to clients looking for a new Caribbean destination, according to advisers. “They have increased their presence with travel advisors over the past year,” said Denise DelVecchio of Magic Destinations Travel, LLC of Texas.
