EDWARDSVILLE, Illinois (EMUEagles.com)- The Eastern Michigan University women’s basketball team is set for its first road game of the season with a matchup in the “Prairie State” against the Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville Cougars on Sunday, November 13th. The matchup, which is the first between the two programs, will begin at 1 pm CT inside the First Community Arena.
The game will be broadcast on ESPN+. Fans can follow the action via live stats at EMUEagles.com/livestats. Additionally, the team’s official Twitter account, @EMUWBB, will provide score updates throughout the contest.

SEASON PREMIERE: The opening doubleheader of the 2022-23 season was dubbed “The Season Opener” and was well attended in terms of fans and results. The women defeated rival Lindenwood University by a score of 71-56, while the men defeated Wayne State University 75-66. Doors opened at 4:00 PM before the women’s game, where fans filed onto the green carpet to the George Gervin GameAbove Center and had their “celebrity” photos taken. Fans attending the opener received a free t-shirt, a box of popcorn with a voucher for a free box of popcorn, and several posters, including the season opener poster and the season schedule poster for both teams.

SEASON OPENING: In 47 seasons, the Green and White have compiled a 32-15 record in season openers. Additionally, the Eagles have won nine of their last 11 cap-lifters, including eight in a row from 2008-09 to 2018-19. Prior to the Nov. 7 win over Lindenwood, the East’s most recent season-opening win came in the shortened 2020-21 season, when the Eagles opened their season with a 65-52 road win over Southern Illinois, on November 25. , 2020.

STARTING AT HOME: This season’s cap lifter marked the eighth time in the last 10 years that EMU has started the season on its home court. The Eagles are now 7-1 in those games, with the only loss coming last season to Youngstown State University, who beat the Green and White 70-67 on Nov. 9.

ALL THE TIME AT OPEN HOUSES: Eastern Michigan entered Monday’s contest against Lindenwood with a 35-11 record in home openers. Prior to EMU’s home opener setbacks to Youngstown State (2021) and the University of Illinois-Chicago (2020), EMU had won 20 consecutive home openers (every season since 2000-20). With the win over the Lions on Nov. 7, the Eagles now hold a 36-11 all-time home opener record.

CHASE 200: After the 71-56 victory on Nov. 7, the Eastern Michigan women’s basketball program has amassed a total of 199 victories inside the George Gervin GameAbove Center since it opened for play in the 1998-1999 season. EMU can reach 200 all-time with just one home win this season.

How nice to be at home: After the season opener against Lindenwood, Eastern will play six more non-conference home games during the 2022-23 campaign. The total of seven non-conference contests is the most for the program in a decade, when it played seven non-conference games at home during the 2012-13 campaign.
Eastern Michigan went 3-1 in non-league games a season ago.

EARNING YOUR WINGS: Several East players made their Eagles debuts in the win over Lindenwood, including freshman Olivia Smithtransfer of second Tayra Ekeand senior Irekpitan Ozzy-Momodu. The three added 40 points in 72 total minutes of play.

look out for ozzy: senior Irekpitan Ozzy-Momodu recorded the Eagles’ only double-double of the night in the win over Lindenwood, the 11th of his career and first in an East jersey. The forward led the green gills in points with 18 and 11 rebounds and was the only member of the team who was perfect from the free throw line (4-4).

Double-digit scorers: Three Eagles hit double-digit points in win over Lindenwood: Lachelle Austin (16), Irekpitan Ozzy-Momodu (18) e Olivia Smith (13). The last time the Green and White registered three or more players in double-digit scoring was at Ball State on March 5, 2022, when Austin, Ce’Nara Skanese Zaniya Nelson each scored 10 or more points.

KEEP CONTROL: The Eagles trailed the Lions just once in the first half and outscored the visiting team 36-24 in the first 20 minutes of the contest. The Green and White continued their control of the game in the second half, picking up 35 additional points to close out the win over Lindenwood on November 7th.

no no No: Eastern Michigan blocked nine shots in a Nov. 7 win over Lindenwood. That number is tied for seventh on the all-time record for most shutouts in a single game inside the George Gervin GameAbove Center. The nine blocks are third-highest overall, with 12 being first.

BILLING CITY: Eastern won the turnover battle 17 times in 27 starts, including 14 times during Mid-American Conference play a season ago. During league action, EMU had an eight-game stretch in which it forced more turnovers than it gave up.
True to their 2021-22 trend, the Green and White opened their 2022-23 season by forcing 20 Lindenwood turnovers to Eastern’s 10.

WE CAN’T LEAVE 70: EMU went 1-12 in 2021-22 when allowing more than 70 points. Additionally, EMU is 9-68 when allowing more than 70 points since the start of the 2016-17 season.
The Eagles defense has done a great job of limiting their opponents to just 56 points so far, starting the 2022-23 campaign 1-0.

SCOUTING SIU-EDWARDSVILLE: Sunday’s meeting with SIUE will be the first between the two schools. The Redskins are scheduled to face the Saint Louis University Billikens today, November 11th, before hosting the Eagles on Sunday, November 13th. Earlier in the week, SIUE hosted Missouri S&T in an exhibition game where the Minors topped the Cougars 82-79 in the first action between the two teams this season.
Last year, SIUE finished 13-18 overall and 8-10 in Ohio Valley Conference play. The Cougars appeared in the OVC tournament, defeating UT Martin 86-84 in the first round before falling to Murray State University, 76-84 in the quarterfinals to conclude their 2021-22 season.

FIRST TIME AGAINST THE PUMAS: The Green and White will face the Red and White for the first time in each other’s program history. Sunday’s contest will begin the historic streak between the two.

ON THE HORIZON: The Eagles look forward to a seven-home non-conference slate, but will continue the show on the road on Sunday, Nov. 13, as the team takes on the Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville Cougars at 1 p.m. at the Vadalabene Center on the campus of SIUE in Edwardsville, Illinois
