Xavi acknowledged Gerard Pique after his Barcelona career ended | Tech US News

Barcelona manager Xavi was unable to call up Gerard Pique for his final game at the club after the legendary Spanish defender was sent off despite being an unused substitute.

The 35-year-old was left out of Barca’s 2-1 win over Osasuna after complaining to the referee about Roberto Lewandowski’s red card just after half an hour.

The Polish striker received two yellow cards – much to the chagrin of Pique – but his absence had no effect on the outcome of the match; Second-half goals from Pedri and Raphinha were enough to cancel out David Garcia’s opener after just six minutes.

Speaking to the media after the match, Xavi admitted that Pique – who bid an emotional farewell at the Camp Nou on Saturday – was likely to come on as a substitute due to Andreas Christensen’s inconsistent play and Eric Garcia’s injury, but that it was clearly not possible after his dismissal.

“I counted on him. Andreas lacked rhythm, Eric had discomfort… and I thought he would play,” admitted Xavi.

“But he was sent off because of the moment. We felt hurt, hence his reaction and the reaction of others.”

Xavi also lamented the officials’ decisions, but praised the character of his Barca side, who held on to win despite being down a player.

“We feel aggrieved. These are very unfair decisions. We had everything against us, because of the goal against, which was a foul. The exclusion of Lewandowski was doubtful … but we have faith, character, personality … the feeling of the team is great.

“I transferred my belief to the players. This is a golden victory.”
